Amnesty International has expressed its deep concern over attacks on Hindu community houses and temples during Durga puja, the biggest festival of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

On Monday, 18 October, In a statement, Amnesty International’s South Asia campaigner Saad Hammadi said that the news of mob attacks on Hindus, their houses, temples, and shrines during the biggest Hindu festival Durga puja, revealed anti-minority sentiments in the country. Repeated attacks on Hindus, communal violence, and the destruction of minority houses and temples in Bangladesh over the past few years mean that the state has failed to fulfill its responsibility to protect minorities.

“Disseminating provocations aimed at religious sensitiveness and creating communal tensions is a severe human rights violation.” The government must take immediate action to stop such heinous offenses against the minorities in the country.

 

"We urge the authorities to take immediate action to ensure security and justice and remedial action against such attacks on minorities," he said. The authorities must immediately, thoroughly, impartially, and transparently investigate the incident and bring the suspects to justice for the violence and vandalism.
